Design and Entrepeneurship
Here I will post my projects from design and entrepeneurship. (Year 1)
Here is my first blog post for Design and Entrepreneurship! In class, we have been learning about different ways to draw real life objects and projects. This is going to be extremely useful when we get into doing real projects. Being able to express your ideas as a drawing is very important especially for a designer. Drawings are almost more important for a customer than words, so they can visualize your creation! We are learning how to draw perspectively in 2-point and 1-point perspectives. We also learned how to draw plans. All of these skills will come in handy later in life and in class especially!

The past few weeks in Design and Entrepreneurship have been all about drawing and planning. In class, we have talked about what makes an entrepreneur successful, how to create plans, and also talked to some guest speakers and successful people. One of the main projects we have been working on is the precedent study. We have completed part 1 and this week we are moving on to part 2. The precedent study is a in depth drawing and understanding of a sculpture and the artist behind that sculpture. I picked the Triangular Bridge Over Water. This sculpture is on the intermediate side and was sort of tricky. When I got there, I was surprised to find out that it was a lot more detailed than I thought it was. But in the end, I got the drawings done and I am fairly proud of myself.

In Design and Entrepreneurship, we have been working on many things, including professionalism, entrepreneurial techniques, and research of other successful people. One thing we created lately was a professional resume (shown below). We also have many visitors to our class explaining their story and road to success. One thing I particularly enjoy about the visitors is that we get to see what it is like in real life to apply the things we learn to create a business. We also learned about many useful tactics when starting a business including Bird in Hand philosophy, Lemonade philosophy, and the importance of dedication and perseverance to what you want to accomplish. This specifically hits home for me, since I have a few hobbies in my life which require much dedication, time, practice, and a lot of persistence.

In Design and Entrepreneurship class, we have been dedicating our time to learning many useful things including design strategies, equity in entrepreneurship, and skills of an entrepreneur.
One of the main things that I learned from this week was the 5 steps of the design thinking process. I think the first 3 will help me the most in the future: empathize, define, and ideate. These three words help with starting the process of designing a new product, especially when you have a specific customer group that needs specific things. These three steps are essential and I will use them a ton in the future when I am designing literally anything!
We have learned a lot, but in this blog post, I decided to highlight one specific thing that I find the most helpful from the past few weeks.

Lately in class, we have been working in brainstorming or “idea mapping” business ideas and opportunities. This strategy we learned opened my mind up to many other business opportunities that I had never thought if before and made me realize how many things I am passionate about can be turned into a real business. We worked on many different idea maps and presented some of them to the class which boosted my confidence since people were engaged and curious about my ideas.
We also began working in the shop with drills, pneumatic sanders, angle grinders, and drivers. I am excited to start creating things in the shop and begin bringing my ideas to life in tangible form.
So far, in person class has been going great and I am very thankful I chose this class for my junior and senior year. Here are some pictures:

In D + E, we have been learning about market research, target audience, the Lean canvas, and team work.
The big thing we have focused on is market research and knowing your target audience/customers. We have used a variety of tools and methods to practice these thing and we have worked to understand each topic. We did a few exercises and worksheets to practice with market research, including the "How Much Is That Doggy" activity and a few others. In "How Much Is That Doggy", we paired up and did "research" on each other's pet experiences and asked questions to understand a few issues that may occur from owning a pet. We then developed a product or service that solves a problem that we discovered during the market research. I feel that the exercises we did in class helped me a lot will understanding the topics.
Another thing we have focused a lot on is the Lean Canvas. We have learned a lot about the Lean Canvas throughout the year, and it applies to almost everything we do. It basically teaches us the most important parts about starting a business, what you need to know, and the different aspects of entrepreneurship. Lean is a way to describe this process by keeping all of the important parts while stripping away any information or aspects that are unimportant.
One of the more fun activities we did that helped with building and teamwork skills was building two different model bridges and then one big bridge as a class. For the model bridges, we got a budget and we were allowed to purchase different sized balsa wood, popsicle sticks, and the glue was free. We had to build it to span a 30 inch gap. We learned briefly about truss designs and then went to work. For the class bridge, we designed the truss together and purchased 2x4's and plywood with a budget of $400, which we went over slightly. It took us about 4 building days and 6 days total to completer the bridge. The bridge had to span a 20 foot gap.
D + E has really helped me get a closer look into the business world and will forever help me out.
